It takes a village
During my time with the DICE Group—before transitioning to Jefferson Health’s Digital Marketing Team—I had the opportunity to help develop tools that could benefit the hospital in a variety of ways. Around that time, my wife and I were expecting twins, which inspired me to create a concept for an app that could support mothers throughout their pregnancy journey and encourage family involvement.
Hoodle was inspired by my twins and the experiences my wife went through during her pregnancy. While the app remained a conceptual project and its features were not fully developed before I transitioned departments, I believe this piece offers valuable insight into my design thinking, creative approach, and focus on branding.
I had never heard the phrase “it takes a village” until my wife became pregnant — and I quickly realized how true it is. Support is everything during that journey, which inspired me to design an app focused on helping moms-to-be feel cared for, connected, and supported.
Goals for Hoodle:
Provide mothers with access to professional mental health support.
Create a central hub where family members can stay informed and step in to help when needed.
Logo Concept
When designing the logo, I wanted to capture the essence of both motherhood and fatherhood within the name. The phrase “it takes a village” reminded me of a neighborhood — a community coming together — where the “village” represents family. The dots surrounding the icon symbolize that circle of support and connection among loved ones.
Design Approach
I wanted to keep the design simple yet engaging, with a few fun interactive features. I also saw an opportunity to add a bit of gamification—like earning kudos or stars for helping with tasks or tracking how much milk was pumped—to make the experience more motivating and family-friendly.
Mental health
One feature I wanted to explore is supporting the mother’s mental health. Providing the option to add a personal therapist’s contact information or to connect the mother with a recommended therapist could be highly beneficial.
